From May 22 to September 20, 2026

The exhibition “Amazons! Horsewomen and Fashion Icons” opens at the Museum of Fashion and Costume in Arles, from May 22 to September 20, 2026. At the heart of its new museum space in Arles, Fragonard unveils the history of women’s equestrian costumes in Europe and their influence on fashion, from Antiquity to the present day.

“Wearing costume as one wears memory and tradition, they ride proud mounts, companions on the road in white dresses, and share with them the trials dictated by fate. With ribbons, lace, petticoats, fichus, waistcoats, trousers or shirts, against the wind or facing the marshes, five contemporary horsewomen offer us a fragment of their lives on their lands, from the Camargue to the banks of the Aude. Through textiles, intimate narratives emerge, in the accumulation of patterns, cuts, textures, symbols and memories. Garments and ways of dressing that shape bodies and identities, often sewn by their own hands, sometimes passed down from one generation to the next. These women come from a lineage spanning millennia. In both their conventions and their freedom, they reveal a world in motion, an inner territory where only they hold the reins. At the boundary between documentary, performance, and staging, Cavalcade composes a choral work: five testimonies of horsewomen, a photographic film, a series of images, and an installation of accumulated textiles.”
