DANIEL BOURGAIS

Daniel Bourgais currently lives in Montrouge and works in Paris. Drawing, observation, and walking are habits he quickly adopted. His gaze upon nature and the city has led him to question how we perceive a defined environment.

This is why he pursued architectural studies at ENSA Normandie (Rouen), where he refined his understanding of the connection between architecture, landscape, and the environment. During his studies, he developed a particular sensitivity to the rehabilitation of existing structures, ruins, landscapes, and art. His graduation sparked a desire to connect and extend a comprehensive reflection on the relationship between humankind and nature.

As part of the GARDEN PARTY exhibition, Daniel Bourgais presents several installations that bring together fragments of landscapes he has explored in France during the summer season. The Valgaudemar Summer 2021 series captures a moment of sunbathing at the mountain summit, at an altitude of 2090 meters. After the exertion of the climb, the body is drawn in by the coolness of the lake and the vibrant colors. In his practice, Daniel uses photogrammetry, a measurement technique that determines the shape, dimensions, and position of an object in space from multiple photographs of that object. The resulting image is then processed, printed, and exposed in a light box, or negatoscope. The landscape fragments captured by the artist's eye are thus transformed into natural settings within the exhibition, offering a moment of suspended contemplation.
