When Black is Burned

Marguerite Bornhauser

Attentive to details, to asides, to ordinary events, Marguerite Bornhauser offers us a singular vision of the world, revealing the part of poetry that is hidden in our daily lives. Through her works, she creates fictional snapshots that deceive the eye to better transport us to another place - yet often much closer than we think.

Taking the opposite view of classical figuration, it is the close-ups, the de-framing, and the textures that play the leading role. Looking at something other than the main subject, would that not be the artist's primary intention? The curve of a back, the weave of foliage or the reflections on the water then lose their formal definition to become as many motifs of a free and new narration, like a melody.

“What is the color, when black is burned?” chants Neil Young in I am a child, which gives its title to the series. Like the child in the song, Marguerite Bornhauser questions what happens to color, or rather light, when it is burned. Whether in her color, black and white or negative photographs, black takes on the subtle texture of ink, offering a chiaroscuro vision of the world.

In the exhibition, threads are woven between the images, like so many fragments of a film for which everyone will imagine their own scenario. A lovely mise en abyme, since the artist precisely puts the spotlight on the moving image in the last room of the exhibition, through a new video installation.
