When black is burned - Marguerite Bornhauser

July 7 to 20, 2025

Attentive to details, to the side, to ordinary events, Marguerite Bornhauser offers us a singular vision of the world, revealing the poetic part that hides in our daily lives. Through her works, she creates fictional snapshots that deceive the eye to better transport us to elsewhere - yet often much closer than we think.

Taking a break from classical representation, it is the close-ups, the cropping, and the textures that play the leading role.Looking at something other than the main subject, wouldn't that be the artist's primary intention? The curve of a back, the texture of foliage, or the reflections on water then lose their formal definition to become as many motives of a free and new narrative, in the manner of a melody."What is the color, when black is burned?"(What color is it when black is burned?) Neil Young sings in I am a child, which gives the series its title. Like the child in the song, Marguerite Bornhauser wonders what happens to color, or rather light, when it is burned. Whether in his color, black and white, or negative photographs, black takes on the subtle texture of ink, offering a chiaroscuro vision of the world.

In the exhibition, threads weave between the images, like fragments of a film for which each person can imagine their own scenario.A nice mise en abîme, as the artist honors the moving image in the last room of the exhibition, through an unprecedented video installation.
